Long time, no talk! I’d like to take a moment to apologize for my static silence recently. I’ve been a little busy these days. Let me explain:
Since leaving The Daily Press back in November I’ve been working full-time with Amelie’s French Bakery as their Assistant Coffee & Tea Director to help train their baristas and develop their coffee program alongside their brilliant and hard-working coffee director, M. It’s quite fun. Every day at work, I get to relive my coffee “a-ha!” moments over and over through the eyes of new baristas. The past seven months been growing and challenging: navigating how to communicate effectively on a large scale (literally hundreds of people work for this company!), learning how to be a more patient and flexible person, figuring out how to be a good educator… it’s not easy, but it’s incredibly satisfying. This new venture has awakened within me a passion I didn’t know I had for barista training and coffee education.
Inspired by the amazing coffee community feels from the SCAA’s Event in Atlanta this past April, I put together a private Facebook group called “CLT Barista Exchange“. The goal of this group is to help increase connectivity among coffee professionals in the Charlotte area. Members regularly post information about local coffee events, education and work opportunities, regional coffee news and more. If you’re a Charlotte-area roaster, barista, tech, cafe manager, etc. then you’re a part of this community and we want to connect with you!
In early May I had the opportunity to spend a few days in Taylors, South Carolina at the Ally Brazilian Coffee Merchants‘ SCAA training lab. There, I was able to take my Level 1 barista courses and exams as well as participate in the Instructor Development Program with the SCAA. I can now proudly say that I’m a Level 1 certified barista through the SCAA! I plan on traveling to New York City to take my Level 2 classes at Irving Farm in September. Hopefully by January 2017 I’ll be a certified Level 2 barista- fingers crossed!
Last, but most certainly not least (and not even a little bit coffee-related): I’m getting married this August! I am beside myself with excitement and can’t wait to take the plunge with my best friend.
I should also mention that I’ve taken over the “10 Minutes With” segment on the Barista Magazine blog, so if you’re into that sort of thing you should definitely check it out. I’m hoping to continue to give them interviews with rad coffee folks weekly. If you think you know someone that I should write about, or if you think you might be that someone, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and who knows? Maybe you’ll be my next interviewee!
Until next time, folks!
